Brooklyn (Kings County, approximate population 2,486,235) is the most populous borough in New York City. Until 1898 Brooklyn was an independent city and still has a very strong native identity. The borough of Brooklyn ranges from a modern business district in downtown to large historic residential neighborhoods in the central and southeastern areas. Brooklyn also has a long beachfront and is home to Coney Island, famous as one of the earliest amusement parks in the United States.
